... is the BIG DAY!
Dear HMS Parents and Students, My name is Mr. Dossett and I will be teaching the Honors Algebra and Intermediate Algebra courses at Heath Middle School this year. I am really looking forward to an fantastic new school year! I wanted to take just a moment to welcome you back, introduce myself and cover a couple of quick items for this year: The quickest and easiest way to get in touch with me is by email: [email protected]. Communication with parents is very important to me, so I typically check email often throughout the day and evening. Supplies Lists are available here: Honors Algebra Supplies List (7th & 8th) Intermediate Algebra Supplies List (7th & 8th) This is an ADVANCED MATH class. Student expectations for these classes are much higher than in a standard math class. Please review the student expectations document. Below are a few of these expectations: Classroom Behavior - Behavior Contracts will come home in the next few days for you to read and sign Academic Expectations - In an advanced class, the teacher’s primary job is to challenge the students and our class expectations will be very high. We will be covering a lot of advanced content and covering it quickly. Discipline, hard work initiative and positive attitudes will be required. Some students who have typically received A’s in previous classes may receive their first B or C. This is the nature of an advanced course. Complete Assignments - Students will have homework almost every night. They will also have monthly Accelerated Math assignments and periodic projects to complete. Failure to complete these assignments will seriously impact their grade. Consistent Attendance - We will cover important concepts *every day*. Students who miss that content must use the resources available to them to get the content they missed (textbook, class website, internet, after-school tutoring). If you have questions, thoughts or concerns, I invite you to contact me any time. I am looking forward to a terrific year! See you tomorrow! Thank you, Mr Dossett See ya in 15 hours!

Here are some things you need to know at the midpoint of our 2nd semester.
UNIT 3 QUIZ MONDAY - Students will be taking the first Unit 3 Quiz this Monday covering LT1-6). Because the content is difficulty, many students will need to spend significant time studying for the test. They worked on study guides Friday and answers have been sent home with students. If they have been lost, you can also find them here: https://goo.gl/omk2BV FRACTION HOME STUDY DUE MONDAY - Students who scored low on our Fraction Assessment Monday were given an assignment Tuesday which is due Monday, Nov 11th. Students will receive a 100% Miniquiz score for correctly completing this assignment. Here is a link to all the answers with problems worked out so you can help your students. If students have lost the printed assignment, you can download it here.
ACCELERATED MATH REMINDER - All 5 Accelerated Math Review goals are due **DEC 12th 2017**. Make sure your student is working on these. Please contact me with any questions and enjoy the weekend. Our first Exam is Monday. Exams count 40% of student's quarterly grade (per HMS Math Department). Here are some things you should know.
1. The exam will cover ALL of Unit 1 (LT1-8) 2. Exams are roughly 70% multiple choice and 30% short answer/extended response. 3. Students will have to study for the exam. Please use the quiz study guides I have provided to review. The material will be the same. I have explained to students how to study: a. Work through the problems in the study guides Unit 1 - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6fqN0nIFIuZOVk5c... Unit 2 - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6fqN0nIFIuZbEd4O... b. Check the answers c. If you get it wrong, figure out how and work through them again the right way 4. A student who has done well on the quizzes should expect to study no less than 20-30 minutes. If they have struggled, they will need to put in more time. They may need to go back and watch the videos. This is also a great time to complete the Accelerated Math goals in the "CLASS" group to prepare. 5. Students have struggled most on LT6 and LT7. Make sure they have memorized Commutative, Associative and Distributive properties and how to use them - especially the Distributive Property - to write equivalent expressions. REMIND your students: THEY CAN DO THIS! You guys are a FANTASTIC group of parents! I've had so many contacts with parents who are willing to go the extra mile to help their kids succeed this year! I have a middle-schooler too and I know school can be stressful for parents too. What they are learning this year is essential for their success in the years to come. Encourage them, work with them when you can and let me know if you need anything. Thanks! Mr D I have a feeling this is going to be a GREAT year!
